Dare to care
It’s astonishing to think that heart attacks on Mondays are at the highest rate when compared to other days of the week.
Studies show that this phenomenon is often attributed to the sudden increase in stress levels as people transition from the weekend to the workweek.
Additionally, changes in sleep patterns and lifestyle over the weekend (such as poor decisions) may also contribute to this increased risk, which worsens over time.
Today, the day after a 3-day Memorial Day weekend, I have witnessed this statistic in person as I sit in an office space that oversees the “Life Flight” helicopter landing pad for a hospital.
It has taken more flights today than usual.
For many, job dissatisfaction is a contributing factor.
This has often led me to a sense of “guilt.”
This guilt arises because I love what I do, yet I can’t help but feel a disconnect and guilt in relation to others who are unhappy with their work or dread going to work, especially on Mondays or after a long weekend.
This form of guilt stems from recognizing my own fortunate circumstances and the disparity between my positive experiences and the negative experiences of others in the workforce.
I certainly don’t feel like I’m somehow special or that I am luckier than others, but I do recognize there is a reason why I don’t relate to the “Monday Blues.”
Additionally, working with cancer patients, I often see how “survivor’s guilt” can also be a real issue for those who beat the odds.
Many post-cancer patients overcome this “survivor’s guilt” through finding “meaning.”
Finding meaning in your experiences and in the act of surviving these experiences can help transform feelings of guilt into a sense of purpose and fulfillment!
For me, the antidote for “career privilege guilt” or “occupational guilt” is simply CARING.
“No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”
• Theodore Roosevelt
I know that “caring” can speed up any day at any job or occupation.
When you laser-focus and truly care, time speeds up.
Perhaps not everyone is in a position or occupation where they would like to be forever, but if you truly care and take pride in what you do, you will crack the code on the Monday Blues Phenomenon!
By simply choosing to care…
