Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What do you do?
I specialize in addressing musculoskeletal imbalances that can lead to pain and dysfunction. Common conditions I treat include back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, knee pain, foot pain, and more. My approach is tailored to each individual, no matter your age or level of athleticism.

2. What can I expect during a session?
During a session, I’ll assess your musculoskeletal system to identify any imbalances or dysfunctions around the area of concern. Treatment typically involves targeted manual therapy to release tight muscles, reactivate inhibited muscles, and restore proper function. Each session is customized to your specific needs.

3. How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required varies depending on your unique condition and goals. Many patients discover that what they initially perceive as one specific pain (like lower back pain) is often connected to other issues, such as immobile or hypertonic hips, poor hip rotation leading to early arthritis in the lumbar spine, or an out-of-alignment thoracic spine impacting shoulder function. This "process of discovery" often reveals underlying connections, moving you from subconscious dysfunction (where issues exist without pain) to conscious dysfunction (where pain or limitations are noticed). Through targetted treatments, we can reach conscious function (most Physical Therapy interventions reach this level, but often, patients go back to where they started when they stop treatments) and eventually the ultimate goal is to reach subconscious function, where your body moves optimally without conscious effort or “cueing”—especially important for athletes.

4. Do you offer services for children?
Yes, I work with patients of all ages, including children as young as 1 year old. Neuromuscular imbalances that we struggle with as adults often begin in childhood. Assessing and addressing these imbalances in growing and developing youth is a valuable investment in their future, particularly if they are experiencing pain or dysfunction while participating in sports.

5. Can manual therapy help with chronic pain?
Absolutely. Chronic pain often results from long-standing musculoskeletal imbalances. My approach aims to correct these underlying issues, providing relief and improving overall function.

6. What is the difference between manual therapy and regular massage?
While both manual therapy and regular massage involve hands-on techniques, manual therapy is more focused on addressing specific musculoskeletal imbalances and dysfunctions that lead to pain. It is a more targeted approach aimed at correcting the root cause of the problem, rather than just providing relaxation.

7. How do you assess which muscles need treatment?
I use a combination of techniques, including manual muscle testing and an assessment of your movement patterns, to identify which muscles are inhibited, tight, or otherwise dysfunctional. This allows me to develop a customized treatment plan that addresses the root cause of your pain.

8. Do you take insurance?
I operate on a cash-based, out-of-pocket model. This approach allows me to focus on providing the best care possible without the limitations often imposed by insurance companies. Insurance often dictates the type and duration of care, which can be disconnected from the needs of my patients. By working directly with you, I can ensure that the treatment is tailored specifically to your needs.

9. What should I wear to my session?
It’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for easy movement. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to expose the affected area for more direct treatment. We will follow the draping protocols and insure each patient feels comfortable and secure.

10. How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment directly through our website, neuromuscleworks.com, or by text messaging our office. I recommend booking in advance, as my schedule often fills up quickly.
